Trinity's Prayer Ministry

As United Methodists, we have pledged to support the church through our prayers, our presence, our gifts and our service. The Prayer Ministry team meets several times a year as needed. Our goal is to make prayer increasingly intentional so that it permeates every aspect of Trinity. All Trinity members are welcome to be a part of the Prayer Ministry as a team member and share in any of the prayer opportunities offered at Trinity.

The mission of the Prayer Ministry of Trinity United Methodist Church is to be in prayer, to encourage and teach others to pray, and to provide prayer opportunities for our church family in order that the priorities, lives, work, and activities of our congregation will always be undergirded with the inspiration and direction of the Holy Spirit who continually calls us to serve Christ from the heart of Durham.

To Be in Prayer

  • The staff spends time in prayer each week.
  • All committee meetings are opened and closed in prayer.
  • The Mens Prayer Group meets at the church at 6:30 a.m on Thursday mornings for breakfast, study, and prayer.
  • The Midweek Prayer Group meets on Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. to pray for any requests and for our church, community and world.

To encourage and teach others to pray

  • Prayer Guides are available in each pew in the sanctuary for use in praying for our worship services.
  • Prayer request cards are available in the pews, at the back of the sanctuary, in the Church Office, and outside the Chapel.
  • Requests placed in Handmade wooden prayer boxes in the sanctuary, Church Office, and outside the Chapel or placed in the offering plates are lifted up by the preacher, the staff, and the Midweek Prayer Group.
  • The church newsletter, The Steeple, contains prayer foci for the month on the church calendar and for (optional) use with the prayer request cards. Posters with these foci are placed on easels in the Narthex. Also, The Steeple includes an article on prayer from the prayer ministry.
  • The Prayer Ministry gives age-appropriate books on prayer to children of the church at the beginning of the new Sunday School year.
  • The Prayer Ministry works with the Education Committee to provide prayer lessons during Sunday School hour for children and to encourage adult classes to focus on prayer in their classes each year.
  • Prayer cards and pamphlets regarding handling grief are sent to the bereaved.
  • The Care Notes Library, Christian booklets dealing with life struggles, are available outside the church office and in the narthex.
  • Prayer Requests are made available at our Pancakes for the People events.

To provide prayer opportunities for our church family

  • Beginning the Year in Prayer, an evening prayer service usually held on the first Sunday in January, dedicates the new year to Christ.
  • The church office sends out prayer requests each week (and as needed) in an email form.
  • A box on the back of the bulletins lists known new prayer requests.
  • Prayer Sheets are available for the congregation to sign, committing to prayer that week for persons, activities, or events.
  • Prayer Guides are made available for mission trips.
  • Prayer Sign-up sheets are made available for the Methodist Conference and National Day of Prayer.
