Urban Ministries of Durham

If you were not at church last week or just forgot to bring a quantity of staples, please take the time this week to add to your grocery list canned, boxed or vacuum-packed food pouches, such as cereals, Macaroni & Cheese, Peanut Butter & Jelly, rice, beans, cookies, packaged dessert & cake mixes, soups, juice.  Individual sizes are always needed as well as regular and family sizes. When you choose your items from the shelves at the stores, pick up an extra one for the Food Pantry.  Also you might consider using your food coupons for the Food Pantry.

Community Kitchen Team

Community Kitchen Team set two records on the night of Monday, June 16: 230 dinners were served by an ALL FEMALE TEAM.  We welcomed a number of first-time volunteers:  Peggy and Laura Baker, Karen MacDonald, Emily Palmer and some of the middle school Bible Study Group members -- Rachel Utz and Leland MacDonald.  The old timers were Jennifer Brown, Marie Montague, Linda Delbridge, and Ruth Jane Roycroft.

Urban Ministries of Durham operates the Community Shelter on behalf of Durham County. The homeless count in Durham on March 26, 2008 was 590. This is a 10 percent increase over 2007. Of the 590 homeless individuals, 73 were children. At the time of the census, 150 of the homeless (25.4 percent) were in residence at the community shelter downtown run by Urban Ministries.

  • Trinity Church supports the feeding of approximately 1,200 homeless people (adults and children) each year. Our outreach team purchases, prepares and serves dinner on the third Monday night every other month.
  • Trinity members bring grocery staples each Sunday for distribution by the Food Pantry at Urban Ministries. The Food Pantry at Urban Ministries depends on Trinity throughout the year, and reminder notices are posted regularly around the church. Look for the notices and help fill the shelves!
  • As a part of Trinity's outreach to Durham from the heart of the city, we offer a pancake breakfast on the 5th Sunday of each month that provides a 5th Sunday. It is a breakfast fellowship for everyone, with the doors to the Fellowship Hall being opened at 8:00 a.m. Pancakes for the People is a great opportunity to be in ministry. Please call the church office at 683-1386 to register your support for this unique outreach. Angela Fountain coordinates and orchestrates the volunteers for supplies, financial gifts, cooks, servers, people to set up and clean up when the breakfast hour concludes at 10:00 a.m.
